Eoghan Presents in Marseilles

Eoghan was selected to represent Ireland at the ESOC Young Investigator Workshop organised by the European Association for Chemical and Molecular ScienceEuCheMS-logo_web-smalls (EUCheMs) Division of Organic Chemistry. The workshop was held in Marseilles from July 4th-6th, and featured talks from each of the 29 researchers selected to attend by their national organisations in Europe, the USA, Canada and China. This event is rapidly becoming one the most important young investigator networking events for organic chemists in the world. The Irish selection process was coordinated by Dr Nick Gathergood, Irish Rep on the EUCHEMS Division of Organic Chemistry. Thieme will publish a special issue of Synlett dedicated to the YIW 2013 meeting. We thank the organising committee for making this excellent meeting happen.

Eoghan also presented the group’s research at the 18th European Symposium on Organic Chemistry (ESOC) in the beautiful city of Marseilles (July 7-12th), which was attended by more than 800 scientists. The excellent science was matched by the venue (see below) and hospitality (courtesy of our hosts from the Institut des Sciences Moléculaires de Marseille (iSm2) from Aix-Marseille Université).

Paper published in Chemistry a European Journal

Our latest paper has just appeared online in Chemistry – A European Journal. The paper describes the use of vinylsulfonium salts to synthesise cyclopropane-fused heterocycles from readily available starting materials with excellent levels of diastereoselectivity. These interesting structures should be of particular interest to medicinal chemists. This paper arises from an ongoing collaboration with the Aggarwal group at the University of Bristol, UK. We thank EPSRC, GSK and SFI for funding.
