Congratulations to Ren who passed her PhD viva voce exam today! After 4 years of hard work the day has finally come. We are having a celebration, it’s great to have a reason to party again this week. The examination was conducted by Prof. Christian Pedersen (Uni. Copenhagen) as the external examiner and Assoc. Prof. Paul Evans (UCD) as the internal examiner, with Assoc. Prof. Elaine O’Reilly (UCD) as chair. In the afternoon Prof. Pedersen gave a seminar on his own research in the area of carbohydrate chemistry. Ren’s PhD was part-sponsored by Science Foundation Ireland. Her first publication was published in Org. Biomol. Chem. this Summer, and more will follow.
Congratulations to Roisin who passed her viva voce examination today! This is culmination of 4 years of research for Ro. We are having a party to celebrate (of course). The examination was conducted by Prof. Bruno Linclau (Uni. Southampton) as the external examiner and Assist. Prof. Marina Rubini (UCD) as the internal examiner, with Assistant Prof Andrew Phillips (UCD) as chair. In the afternoon Prof. Linclau gave a seminar on his own research in the field of carbohydrate chemistry. Roisin’s research was funded by a UCD School of Chemistry Research Demonstratorship. Roisin has already started work in the Irish pharmaceutical industry with Pfizer in Cork.
Congratulations to Ande! He has been awarded a prestigious 2-year Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship by the Irish Research Council to pursue research on Stereoselective Organocatalytic Glycosylations. Ande put in the hard work of applying for the fellowship last November and it is great to see it pay off. Well done Ande!
We had our SFI midterm grant review yesterday. Eoghan, Di, Ren, Joe, Ande and Gaffney presented our research results so far to the review panel composed of SFI staff and international experts. We especially thank Prof. Nicola Pohl and Prof. Alexei Demchenko for their time and thoughtful engagement. The discussions will help us to progress the project going forward into the second half of the grant. At the end of the day we celebrated at Clonskeagh house.
